Looks like it is starting out like the other Arab spring battles, but in this one it appears that the leader of Turkey is trying to become more Islamic and curtailing liquor sales and the rioters feel they are losing freedoms.

It would be nice to see one of these battles go the secularists way.

The liquor curtailing wasn't much beyond what we have in some US States

I was surprised by the tenor of the reaction.

Historically, Turkey's military has enforced secularism. This seems like a real curious turn-around.

No liquor sales within 100 meters of a mosque and 17,000 new mosques have been built in the last decade, so many restaurants will have to take it off the menu and with no liquor sales after 10PM, so nightclubs will be closing early.

I have a really good friend from high school who lives in Istanbul. The PM is not liked at all by the general public, but because of the way they vote it's hard to muster enough percentage of the vote to get him and his party out. These protests were sparked by a very unpopular gov't move and the pics I saw had no MP, just regular police handling the rioters. It will be interesting to see how it continues.

OWS was all over this protest on FB - the pictures of the bridge over the Bosphorous completely filled with people was impressive.

The editorial board of The Washington Post said Erdogan "is offering unfortunate proof that it is possible to be both elected and authoritarian."

(from CNN)

I can think of a couple other pieces of evidence, as well......... and you don't need to go all the way to Turkey to find them.

Apparently the military is rolling in (my friend passed flatbeds with tanks on them on his way into work just now)...
