Algorithm May Stop 3D Printed Guns
Posted: 28 Jun 2013 04:32 AM PDT

A 3D printer company has invented a "firearm component detection algorithm" that may prevent its devices from being used to make guns. A press release by Danish company Create It REAL explains that the algorithm works by recognizing not designs for specific guns, but instead specific components that would be used in the construction of firearms. "There have been debates in the media on how to stop people from printing guns on their 3D printers," the release explains. "If certain features align, the software will not allow the user to view and print the model."

Wellllll, for every counter-measure, there is a counter-counter-measure... :like:

And hackers will bust that algorithm in no time and reflash the firmware themselves. Wellllll, for every counter-counter measure, there is a counter-counter-counter measure

I've seen her mention that she is a gun owner. As long as she has hers ...

Hackers do love a challenge.

I'm not now, nor have I ever been "anti-gun"... But you knew that....

I am FOR every one of the reasonable Colorado gun-control measures, and would like to see assault-rifles, high-cap magazines, and 3D-printed guns go the way of the dinosaur... But you knew that too.

What does this algorithm do for the following:

1. The nutbag that is now even more enraged because he bought a 3D printer to make guns (because obviously there was not other practical way to get them or do harm), and now he cannot?

2. The other countless companies that will make these printers...and the people that will make them in their garage or shop....or the real bad guys that will make them in their lab?

Just more feel good crap for people that fall for such things. Better hurry up and make another law, so that all companies will fall into line.

It's like Whack-a-Mole... Just keep closing down loopholes...

With this one the nutbags that might be creating unregistered, un-serialized guns (in violation of federal law) in their garages, will suddenly find themselves with one less source for their obsession....

Works for me!

Well it won't work. Evidently you are very technologically naive. Stick to subjects you understand. Or if it makes you feel good... fool yourself into thinking this can be stopped. There are many more pieces of machinery that can mill out all the necessary parts to assemble a gun, besides the "toy machines" that are becoming available to the general public. 30 years ago I couldn't listen to the multitude of police, fire and emergency broadcasts... now you can purchase the technology at Best Buy.

Stick to something you know about... guitars.

While I understand you desires, the violent game of Whack-a-Mole may not be the best example. First it is violent, as I pointed out. Second, have you ever seen anyone win a constantly accelerating game of Whack-a-Mole that never ended?

I have seen the game, it is called our lives when folks with your perspective think you can win, but the game is not won, the game is lived for the next wack.

Wack away, eventually your arm will get tired and the moles will win. And remember as you are playing, we are all feeding the machine with quarters for a game that cannot we won.

I say train the moles not to pop up, give them better food under the table. Let's work on a less regulated and opportunity limited society so less people become moles.

Clubs don't whack moles, people whack moles as well as create them.

Nobody needs 3 d printers to make firearms.

And so forth.
