Bill would have WalMart fire anyone worth less than $12.50?

What do you guys think of this, they are floating a bill for big box stores to have a min wage of $12.50.

I think I am starting to come around on this.

This would allow WalMart to fire those low skill folks that seem not to care about me and my needs when I shop and replace them with folks that command a higher wage.

I could go there and get better service. Yeah I may have to pay just a little more, but if I can get better service and not have to deal with the lowest class of people, it would be nice.

I guess their only choice will be the support of social welfare programs. They can go from being partially supported, as was identified as the problem, to getting 100% govt support, which I guess is the goal for anyone worth less than $12.50.

Pretty cool, using "care" for poor people, to make them even more poor. That's politics at it's finest. And most people cannot even comprehend this in their head.

If they make the min wage for housepainters $500/hour....are you just going to pay the kid down the street that wage or are you going to hire an artist?

And lets not forget what people shop at Wamart... it's not the 1%, it's mostly the people who need a good deal to survive. Forcing higher pay also forces higher prices on the poor who depend on places like Walmart.

Or Wal-Mart will just build their stores in outlying counties and shoppers will pay sales tax to those states instead of DC.
And the urban poor of DC who don't have vehicles? They will have to pay double for food at corner markets with a poor selection of fresh produce.

Nobody is telling Walmart to fire everyone who makes less... But you knew that.

It is requiring WalMart to pay a living wage of a minimum of $12.50/hour in area with higher living-expense areas... Boo-friggin'-hoo... And WalMart continues to try play the shell-game of cooking their numbers to hide how many employees are full-time vs. part-time.

I hope they hold their feet to the fire...And if WalMart wants to play "hard to get", wellll, Buh-Bye....

Wal-Mart said it will halt plans for three stores in the nation's capitol after the D.C. Council approved a bill that boosts minimum wages paid by large retailers by nearly $5 a hour.

"Nothing has changed from our perspective: we will not pursue Skyland, Capitol Gateway and New York Avenue and will start to review the financial and legal implications on the three stores already under construction," said Steven Restivo, spokesman for Wal-Mart, after the Council approved the vote on Wednesday afternoon. "This was a difficult decision for us - and unfortunate news for most D.C. residents - but the Council has forced our hand."

Restivo told ABC News the company would reconsider if Mayor Vincent Gray vetoes the bill. Mayor Gray has 10 days to sign the bill, veto it or let it pass without his signature.

I wonder if Washington DC pays all its public employees a living wage as well? Do they make sure the landscapers who work the city parks are all paying living wages too?

And why only $12.50 an hour? That's a living wage?

It beats $8.50/hr....

Comparing private-sector wages to public/government wages is the usual apples-and-oranges comparisons anyway...But you knew that.

And you can also say "Buh-bye" to lower prices, jobs and economic development. Of course, if that hurts the poor... so what... never let your ideology stand in the way of human lives... but of course... you knew that.

No I did not know that. Care to explain why it's apples-and-oranges?

And landscapers for city parks could be private or city employees (or both). I don't know which is the case in DC, but if they are worried about what Walmart pays I would hope they show the same concern for their own employees or contractors.

When the legislation clearly targets just Wal-Mart, you know it is just more Walton bashing.

Fine, those jobs will go somewhere else.
