August 1, 2013 4:00 AM Me and My Obamaphones
Not on welfare or below the poverty line? Never mind — here’s your free phone.
By Jillian Kay Melchior
Confession: You’re paying my phone bill.
In the past month, I have received three shiny new cell phones, courtesy of American taxpayers, that should never have fallen into my hands.
He asked for my name and my home address, and that was about it. The whole process took less than five minutes, and I had to provide no documentation verifying my income level or (nonexistent) welfare status.
The SafeLink vendor then referred me to his opposite number, a rep from Assurance. She too took down my information, registering me for another Obamaphone.
I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Since 2009, there has been an urban myth that Obama created a program to provide free phones to low-income Americans at taxpayer expense. There is, in fact, a government program that will provide low-income people with a free or low cost cell phone. It was started in 2008 under George W. Bush.
The idea of providing low-income individuals with subsidized phone service was originated in the Reagan administration following the break-up of AT&T in 1984. (It was expanded and formalized by the Telecommunications Act of 1996.) The program is paid for by telecommunications companies through an independent non-profit, not through tax revenue.
Wow... It must drive them crazy thinking that somehow, somewhere, someone who is poor and needs a job can get a deal on cellphone, so that a potential employer can reach them...

Yes, when they run out of outrage-of-the-day material, they just recycle the old ones... Sometimes the "oldies are best."

"Blame Reagan" - way to reach back in time and twist the truth! Read the article (again if you actually did), those points are addressed along with Obama's expansion of the program. Otherwise crawl back under your rock where you belong.
I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

LJ, neither of your comments are worthy of the keystrokes it would take to reply. Try again when you have some facts to refute the points in the article.

The facts have already been posted. Your categorical dusting off of them because FACTS are something you neither understand nor acknowledge, are also not worthy of the keystrokes it would take to reply...

Wow... Stomped again... Ooopsie... Another teabagger outraged about paying for something he's not paying for... OHHHHH, the outrage...
Link? Proof? Don't have any do you? If VL's source is Wiki then you both have more homework to do.

It wouldn't matter how much proof you were given... Your hatred for the poor, and knee-jerk reaction to something you're not paying for would be the same.
Likewise, enjoy being an ignorant Obamabot, you aren't capable of believing the truth for what it is.
I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.
