Because the public is now using much more strong encryption which takes massive resources to crack.....NSA has pronounced they can crack anything......always been true but at great cost.....look at the massive server farm next door in Utah.......here is a interesting approach....used very effectively by our "enemies":

"Communication across continents seems like a laudable thing, but to what end? Maybe the occasional document of real significance will come the way of someone who can use it to great effect, and maybe genuine empathy can be felt over the vibrating copper and pulsing fibre optics; however, the only real way to keep you safe is not to use such things at all. I know of many people who have closed Facebook accounts, thrown away their Smartphones and reverted (such a negative term) to talking directly (not over the phone) to those who really matter in their lives and writing them letters using pens and paper. Some might call this going backwards. I call it returning to your roots. The surveillance state is unlikely to be able to dig those out. The process of bugging buildings and steaming open envelopes is far too labor-intensive."

NSA uses a keylist of "hot button " words to flag a piece of info for analysis.....so the enemy just sends clear info peppered with these words and NSA is on a "Goose Chase".....millions of these are sent daily to tie up NSA resources. ANY effort can be defeated. Our tax $$$$$$ are wasted....really wasted.

Good point.

#9/11repeat

And if the NSA says we can decode anything the bad guys will just use more dead drops and other old school techniques that we don't have the assets to intercept.

I disagree that there are not enough resources to bug every house and "steam" every letter.

What year is this, 1906?

Most people are bugged by choice using a device the NSA has the right to listen in on at any time and carry it with them. If you are near a networked device, you are bugged if desired by the NSA or a savy criminal.

They photograph every letter front and back, they told us. Even I could shine enough of the right kind of light to read into just about any letter or box. Then I can use a simple app to separate the overlapping text. I think the odds this is already done on top of photos of the outside is 98% now and 100% by the next election.

Despite this we have only just begun to loose our privacy. Many of us will have our insurance rates adjust crap by crap as the toilet sends sample results off to your mandated insurance partner. You will have personal micro drones you cannot even see flying around you all the time reporting back to whoever. If history has taught us anything, NSA wont even have to put them there, you will buy them and put them there yourself in order to get better cell reception or something else petty. In regards to the lack of privacy, I bet we have only scratched the surface.
