"SYDNEY/CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia's conservative leader Tony Abbott swept into office in national elections on Saturday as voters punished the outgoing Labor government for six years of turbulent rule and for failing to maximize the benefits of a now fading mining boom.
Abbott, a former boxer, Rhodes scholar and trainee priest, promised to restore political stability, cut taxes and crack down on asylum seekers arriving by boat.
"From today I declare that Australia is under new management and Australia is once more open for business," Abbott told jubilant supporters in Sydney."...

Just like here as Left politicians care more about the environment than jobs they lose blue collar voters.

One must keep in mind that in Australia the "conservative" candidate is more akin to the progressive wing of the Republican Party or perhaps a Blue Dog Democrat. There is a good article in the most recent edition of The Weekly Standard on Abbott that is worth the read.

They don't understand PS...Its says conservative so he must be just like the conservatives here.. and

They think Hitler was a socialist because he was the leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, lol otherwise known as the Nazi Party. These guys are easily fooled by words.

The blue collar voters made their choice. And while their conservative party is more liberal than the GOP it is still a swing back to the right. One of my Aussie friends is totally posses that Labour lost so I have been giving her grief today. In her mind Abbot is as crazy as Ron Paul.
