BEIJING — The political standoff in Washington has spawned frustration and growing worries in China, which remains the largest holder of U.S. government debt, as the clock ticks down to a possible U.S. debt default this week.

The crisis shows that China and the rest of the world should start to “de-Americanize,” according to a strongly worded commentary from the Xinhua News Agency, China’s leading government-controlled news outlet.

“The world is still crawling its way out of an economic disaster thanks to the voracious Wall Street elites,” the commentary said. “Such alarming days when the destinies of others are in the hands of a hypocritical nation have to be terminated.”

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm considering cashing out my IRA and putting into Chinese Yuan. What happens if the dollar is no longer the world's reserve currency?

As much as Bernanke has toyed with the US dollar, I would still trust it over the currency of a dictatorship that has a known history of devaluing its money to help out export sales.
(I might buy some silver and gold, especially since gold is a lot cheaper than it used to be.)

I thought of that too, but got burned back in the 80's and still have a bitter taste for gold. Things look quite a bit different now though. All of the Western currencies will tank if the dollar is removed as the reserve currency. I know that both China and Russia have been pushing for this and are starting to get some traction. Time to start a new "barter" American currency that is not regulated by the banks and taxed?

You could be right, I forgot that the Fed has been devaluing our currency for decades too.

Most Americans are calling for a de-Americanized world, unfortunately the NSA is not connecting the calls.

This is a two party problem, brought to you by the two parties that only mystical people like those on this board can tell apart. Mentioning either party is like the right arm blaming the left arm for having fingers.

This problem is simply caused by those that continue to ask the govt to do stuff who are not desperate. The scum you elect hear all your wants (you never shut up) for excess and respond knowing that if they find a way to give it to you or pretend to do that, or even hint they will do that, you will vote them in. You overspend, despite the fact that you are capable, unless you are not, like most parents are not capable of educating their child without govt welfare. You want stuff now, so you sacrifice everything for everyone later. You don't really care about your neighbors or the economy, you want to be able to brag about what college your kid went to, esp now when that is likely to be the last thing you will be able to brag about because you essentially requested away their economy with your wants.

The leaders just reflect how stupid the public is in general. When all they do is ask for stuff and more stuff, how could we not go into debt. Most people don't call out the wasters, most of you think I am scum because I call out all the parents who suck the teet and force education to cost 2x as much and be 1/2 as good. But they don't care, they want a better education for their kid now no matter how much others pay even though they know there will be little left for their kid when it is over, as a result of all their collective wants.

Another BS problem here because both those in govt and those in society don't have the balls to call out those that waste govt money, but then ask the govt for more. This is a very well designed problem. It will not go away unless people start treating people that waste govt money, like parents that get $10,000+ a year in govt benefits when they are not desperate as a family, like the thieves they are. These folks and the folks that Bob mentioned trying to fill their fed budgets are the problem, not some political party or two that do the same thing and listen to everyone that wants more at the expense of those that come later.

Let's re-americanize America and pay our own way unless we are not able. But before we do that we have to pay back for the wants of all the un-americans who have lived for the last 50-100 years even though they are working hard to make the kids pay for it.

Silver lining? If the US dollar stops becoming the currency of choice, it will probably suffer a loss in value, so our exports will become cheaper, and manufacturing should be able to add jobs, and more manufacturing might come in from overseas, attracted by lower labor costs, cheaper energy, and cheaper raw materials.
Downside? US debt will be more expensive to finance.

As long as China is selling lots of goods to the US, they are stuck with dollars. They are smart to diversify their massive cash holdings though. Could be good for Gold long term.

Not necessarily. China can demand payment in another currency, all part of the negotiations. But I think this is just political gamesmanship. A devalued dollar would make Chinese goods that much more expensive when they are already worried about other Asian nations like Vietman cutting into their market share.
