Guest commentary by Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association, the national trade association of the solar energy industry

Coloradans can be proud that they are on the cutting edge of this growing market. In 2009, the U.S. solar industry grew despite a harsh recession, creating 17,000 new domestic jobs and increasing revenue by 36 percent. While other sectors downsized or declined, solar expanded, increasing solar electric installations by 37 percent and adding 1,346 additional megawatts (MW) to the grid. In 2009, Colorado continued to be one of the top five states for new solar electric capacity and a leader in utility-scale solar development.

This was not easy, considering that the fossil fuel industry was receiving massive government subsidies - over $70 billion since 2002 - while solar progressed on ingenuity and technological advancement and minimal policy support. The long-term prosperity of large-scale solar manufacturing and development, however, depends on leveling the playing field with fossil fuels.

I have a question: why does the fossil fuel industry receive government subsidies if it is self-sufficient and profitable? Does anyone have an answer for this that I haven't considered yet?

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

71/2 acres of solar panels at DIA only supply 2% power, and I wonder how much water is wasted since in order to be efficient those solar panels need to be washed every 4 days? Spain is very green, but isn't working out too well for them.
