I looked at the issues page on each of the School board candidate's websites. I voted based on those summaries. I don't even know any of their party affiliations.
I also voted against 66 becuase the state was trying to cover issues that are supposed to be dealt with at the district level. The ammendment had some good things in it, but it didn't belong in the constitution, and it shouldn't have been at the state level.
I voted for the pot tax, because I thought the whole idea was to make pot legal and on an equal footing with alcohol - high taxes and all.

If that was true they would have set the tax rate as the same as alcohol. But instead they set it much higher (pun not intended). Most recreational users today already have a supplier and will not need to go to a legal outlet to obtain MJ. And since they set the tax level so high I doubt they will ever go to a retail outlet and pay those high taxes.

Is it really higher than booze? Especially hard alcohol? If you add up the national tax as a percentage of the price of booze, 25% doesn't seem out of line.
Federal Tax rates:
$13.50 per gallon on hard alcohol.
$0.58 per gallon on beer.
$1.07 per gallon for wine. (SC should like this.)
And states will add their own taxes on top of that.

The taxation on marijuana approved by the voters yesterday is lower than the tax levied on tobacco is. Given that reality, how can the tax be said to be high? A 15% excise tax on the production and a 10% sales tax collected at the time of purchase is significantly less than what is paid on tobacco products. Tobacco is taxed at 40% of the manufacturer's list price, which is over double what the excise tax on marijuana will be. Plus there is another tax, something like 4 or 5 cents per cigarette, added on top of that, which works out to something like 20% of the cost of a $5 pack of cigarettes.
Quit your whining already - the tax may be more than what you really wanted to pay, but it is certainly much less than it could have reasonably been given the proponents of recreational marijuana wanted it to be treated like tobacco and alcohol. It's higher than alcohol and lower than tobacco, which puts it in the middle of both. And you're still not happy?
More people will continue to hold onto or apply for their medical marijuana cards because of this measure. The tax (too high IMO) is only for recreational purchases and will drive it underground again. You will be able to buy it cheaper (taxed less) at medical dispensaries. Or once it is available for purchase recreationally, will the medical users be able to buy it at any shop and simply show their card to wiave the additional taxes?
