According to Colorado State Law, landowner permission is required prior to entering or crossing private property, except while traveling on public roadways.

1) CRS 18-4-504 relates to "Third Degree Trespass", which constitutes either a petty offense, misdemeanor, or felony depending upon the classification of the property involved, and the circumstances of the trespass. This statute requires a Court Appearance. Upon conviction, fines can range from $50 to $750 and can include a sentence in county jail. (private property also does not necessarily have to be posted in order for trespass laws to be enforced)

If I looked out my window and saw someone wandering my property I would ask them to leave. Even if it was legal (which it isn't), good manners mandate that you at least ask permission rather than relying on forgiveness. No one belongs on my property without asking first.

MG, it is a 3000 acre ranch , not a house, I tried to do something for a neighbor. I will never try to help find a lost dog again. And MG if I can't get newly adopted dog from your property without calling you first, you are a bad neighbor too. It was never about the "law" it was about a lost dog dragging a 10 foot leash.
Happy now.

A bad neighbor would be one who goes on other property without permission, even if looking for a lost dog.

Be a good neighbor and contact first.

sorry Ashley, but as previously stated there was no postings.
It is now known that the 2 people that made the threats had no standing. The owner of the property thought that finding a lost dog dragging a 10foot leash was more important.
What is wrong with your priorities?

If I didn't know you, and wanted to knock on the door to ask permission, how would I get to your door?

What would you do if you saw someone out riding a horse on the ranch, the horse spooks, rider falls off and is laying motionless on the ground.

Would you call 911 and then just go back to staring out the window?

What is wrong with my priorities? The law. Just because a neighbor has a new dog who hasn't familiarized with the area doesn't give me the right to go wandering on other property without permission, even if not posted to look for him. Contact the owners first and you will probably get a lot more cooperation. Our neighbor had another neighbor who wandered onto their large property looking for their dog and they just about went nuts about the trespassing because there had been a mountain lion not more than 10 minutes before in the same place. You don't know what the circumstances are, contact the owner first.

Walk up the driveway, same thing anyone else having business with me does. But to just go wandering around someone's property, whether it's hundreds of acres or fewer, posted or not, without contacting the owner, is illegal and rude.
