"Children's book author Kari Anne Roy was recently visited by the Austin police and Child Protective Services for allowing her son Isaac, age 6, to do the unthinkable: Play outside, up her street, unsupervised.

He'd been out there for about 10 minutes when Roy's doorbell rang. She opened it to find her son —and a woman she didn't know. As Roy wrote on her blog HaikuMama last week, the mystery woman asked: "Is this your son?"

I nodded, still trying to figure out what was happening.

"He said this was his house. I brought him home." She was wearing dark glasses. I couldn't see her eyes, couldn't gauge her expression.

"You brought..."

"Yes. He was all the way down there, with no adult." She motioned to a park bench about 150 yards from my house. A bench that is visible from my front porch."...

Her son needs a shirt that reads "If you can read this, you're in range and I doubt you're faster than 2,700 feet per second."

I do not think you are allowed to post these kinds of posts and topics until you first clear it with your appropriate official Nanny state government bureaucratic official, and get permission and proper government approved editing and review. Then they will issue you a qualified approved USG approved posting item for regulated transmission to the Internet and any hackers who may be hanging around. Also to be further reviewed by the NSA TSA IRS Microsoft Yahoo Google and Whitehouse.gov bloggers for accuracy and/or verification by non biased community organizing fact checking bloggers with lots of free time on their hands since they are unemployed.

Well played.

At eight, I was walking or biking almost 2 miles to school every day.
Unintended consequences? A bunch of fat kids since they can't walk around the neighborhood.

This is quite interesting. Unless Texas has changed their policies in the last 9 years, it used to be that there was no age limit where children could be left alone after age 5 or 6...it depended on the child's maturity level. A child could be left with an older sibiling...again, there was no age given...it depended on maturity level. If a non-sibling was watching/babysitting a child, they had to be 10 or older and depending on the age of the babysitter, there was also a time limitation.

I also know that there was a whole lot of publicity, negative mostly, about Texas' CPS...there were several deaths of children...ones where the family was investigated and the child was either not taken away or was taken away and then given back.

When I was 5 I was walking the quarter mile up the hill to the school & down the hill from the school, daily...even in blinding snowstorms...but then again this was the '70's and we lived in a very tiny town on the eastern Colorado plains.

I was told once by a person in my chain of command when I was active duty that it is a parent's job to think of everything that could happen to your child in and out of your line of sight. I told him if I did that, I'd be a basket case and the men in the little white jackets would come and take me away...He didn't like that very much. Then very shortly afterward I was talking with a Psychiatrist and I told him that...he told me that I was correct. In my mind whenever I saw the guy in my chain of command, I said "Boo-YA!"

Agreed it is a sad state of affairs these days when neighbors view it as their duty to call the authorities rather than their duty to be part of the eyes and ears of the neighborhood for every child that lives there instead of only their own. But that, I suppose, is the end result of being told for most of your life that it is the government's responsibility to take care of everyone . . .
