Five years after the Fort Hood shootings, Congress is set to make the victims of the shooting eligible to receive Purple Hearts. This benefit and honor had previously been denied them by an Obama administration which insisted that the Islamic, terrorist act was actually workplace violence. The provision states that “Purple Heart medals will be awarded to ‘members of the armed forces killed or wounded in domestic attacks inspired by foreign terrorist organizations.’ ”(3) The provision is included in the 2015 defense bill which is likely to pass the House this week prior to being considered by the Senate next week.
