There are several links, but the US is always first or tied for first. I believe the primary driving factor being prosperity. Myanmar is now tied for first, but the US economy is now ranked #2 worldwide.
The rankings that don't put the US 1st or 2nd, have to introduce factors that are difficult to actually measure, like volunteering and giving to a needy person (all response only items). More proof of prosperity as the primary factor, look for Greece, Argentina, Cuba for depressed economies, thereby not having much to give.
From the article:
Red states are more generous than blue states. The eight states where residents gave the highest share of income to charity went for John McCain in 2008. The seven-lowest ranking states supported Barack Obama.

Conservatives are more generous with their own money. Conversely, liberals are generous with everyone else's money, but tightwads with their own. Check out Arthur Brooks book "Who Really Cares" if you want to learn more.
Why don't blue state people give more?
1) They get taxed more, so they feel their involuntary donations make up for charitable giving.
2) Red states tend to be more religious, tithing to your church, 10%, adds up.
