They will mount mileage tracking devices in your car, per the WSJ. Would you sign up for this if it lowered your insurance costs? I like my personal privacy so I would decline it. Have to think this setup would attract low mileage drivers mainly.
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.
It appears, to me, that GM does not trust the owners of their vehicles. They need only to ask what the mileage the drivers post every year. Rather they would prefer to know when you drive. For example, the tracking device shows that Fred drove 100 miles on Dec 7, and the weather stats show that there was a blizzard in his driving area. Sounds like Fred is a dangerous driver, driving in a storm, better raise his rate or cancel him.
Our insurance carrier offered a discount, predicated on putting a monitor on your vehicle. It would record speed, times of driving, abrupt stopping, etc. In that I often had emergency calls in the early morning hours (driving after midnight garnered demerits), we opted to put the device on the vehicle of my spouse. It was not on the road after midnight.
