NATO leaders declare China a global security challenge

Is China a superpower right now? Economically they are and really should be part of the G8. Militarily? That is still to be determined. They have a large army and navy that hasn't been challenged in a long time, especially China's navy. There is no tradition of them being able to project power outside of their region. The most they have been tested were some encounters with pirates.

China has the strongest military force in the world while India stands at number four, according to a study released on Sunday by the defence website Military Direct.

"The USA, despite their enormous military budgets, comes in 2nd place with 74 points, followed by Russia with 69, India at 61 and then France with 58. The UK just about makes the Top 10, coming in 9th place with a score of 43," said the study.

The study said the "ultimate military strength index" was calculated after taking into consideration various factors including budgets, number of inactive and active military personnel, total air, sea, land and nuclear resources, average salaries, and weight of equipment.

It's not even close.

I have heard this before. But then in the late 70's, they invaded Vietnam and got horribly bogged down against a much smaller force. Just color me skeptical until we see them in operation. After the fall of the Soviet Union, it was revealed from former Soviet officers that much of their military might was an illusion. An illusion that the CIA and US military didn't mind hyping up to justify increased military budgets.

Both China and Vietnam claimed victory in the last of the Indochina Wars.

Ah, yes, it's the old "because some egghead got a prediction wrong 80 years ago, we shouldn't trust any egghead prediction today" argument.

They do get a lot wrong. Real life tends to upset models.
