Afghanistan: China's Turn?

09 Jul 2021 15:11 #1 by FredHayek
As Team Biden prepares to evacuate our troops from Afghanistan, who will fill the vacuum? One theory says the Taliban will be in control of the nation soon. Another possibility? China wants the minerals there and will establish themselves into this war torn nation. Won't be seen as occupiers, instead they will bribe the right people and establish Chinese controlled mines and refining. It will be interesting to see if their plan works better than the US, Soviet, or British versions.

To China, good luck with that.

Some of the invaders in the history of Afghanistan include the Maurya Empire, the Greek Empire of Alexander the Great of Macedon, Rashidun Caliphate, the Mongol Empire led by Genghis Khan, the Timurid Empire of Timur, the Mughal Empire, various Persian Empires, the Sikh Empire, the British Empire, the Soviet Union, and the United States. The history is very clear.

I am ancient enough to remember the fall of Saigon, the evac of the U.S.embassy and mass chaos that
ensued. Pulling out of Afghanistan, will it seem like a slo mo rerun?

One of the differences is the U.S. is not abandoning the U.S. Embassy in Kabul.

Starting pull out in August (in earnest, complete by Sept 11)....there are THOUSANDS of contractors and
personnel at the embassy....it is now 2 months away and our gov. is ATTEMPTING to reassure the people
of that country that we will assist them...HOW do u accomplish two OPPOSING objectives? Pulling out people AND protecting the foreign country.....our gov. does NOT have a good track record of efficiency.

I hope U R correct Wayne, BUT BENGHAZI was a bungled bureaucratic mess...:coffeenews:

Maybe the nation's capital can be held by mercenaries, but it sounds like the Taliban is taking the rural areas. They are claiming Kandahar already.

It does seem like a repeat of our military and political fiasco in Vietnam.

During the United States' longest war, more than 2,300 U.S. troops have been killed in action, and over 20,600 wounded in Afghanistan.

We learned nothing from past history.

Top U.S. commander in Afghanistan steps down, marking a symbolic end to 20 years of war

Army Gen. Austin “Scott” Miller relinquished responsibility in a ceremony at the top U.S. military headquarters. Virtually all other troops, contractors and equipment already have exited the country, defense officials said.

Miller departs Afghanistan as the war’s longest-serving senior U.S. officer. A former commander of the elite Delta Force, he oversaw a tumultuous period that included the Trump administration’s 2020 deal with the Taliban that set the stage for withdrawal, and the final call by Biden in April to remove all troops.

Maybe they'll replace him with Trump, who bragged over and over again that he knew more than his military generals.
