There is a retweet on MMT from Parks and Wildlife, describing how they tranquilized a bull elk and removed a tire that was around his neck. The question is begged, Why not cut the tire instead of the horns of the Elk?
Here is a fellow from my part of the mountains. It is a baby's swing seat on the antler.

Per
the press release,
they couldn't cut the tire because of the steel belt in it.

That's true, but these rangers, who responded on the fly when called to Pine Junction after he was spotted as they have every other time for 2 years now, were finally able to get close enough to tranquilize him and they didn't have those tools. Getting this tire off was paramount and cutting the antlers doesn't harm the elk.

The Elk lost his bling! That tire made him stand out to the ladies! Now he has no tire and no antlers to show off either! Luckily the Rut is over. (Just joking, I am sure that bull is a happy guy now. )

They must be getting that question a lot, they just tweeted this a minute ago:

Why we cut the antlers off & not the tire:
We tried, sawzall was slow going thru steel in the bead of the tire
The animal was under anesthesia, time was limited
Does not harm the elk, will grow back next year
Reduces the chance the bull would be harvested this year

Fred,
That is an excellent point. The rifle season for cow elk extends to Jan 31 in the Pine are. Specifically this is Area 46, where the elk was found. Lots of cow tags issued in this area.
Perhaps they should have sprayed painted him with "Eat more Chicken" I would not be surprised if he is shot and then the hunter finds out that the elk was transgender, dehorned but not castrated. The hunter will get a serious fine from the State.
