It is not unusual to have two or more names on a bank account. This is for estate planning purposes, e.g. with a father/son listing, upon the death of the father the account can be immediately accessed as opposed to being unable to use the funds until probate is resolved.
What is unusual is that the actively shared the account as per the reference.
