Science and Its Pretenders

"If you’re not listening to the answers science provides, it’s not critical thinking anymore; it’s denial."

Thinking Is Power

On a recent podcast, Aaron Rodgers said, “If science can’t be questioned, it’s not science anymore; it’s propaganda…That’s the truth.”

He’s right. Science assumes its knowledge is wrong or incomplete, which is why it doesn’t stop questioning.

However, a hallmark of denial is pretending to care about science, while using “impossible expectations” and “just asking questions” to avoid accepting any scientific conclusions you don’t want to believe.
So if I might correct Rodgers: If you’re not listening to the answers science provides, it’s not critical thinking anymore; it’s denial…That’s the truth.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

And Dr. Fauci, is he a scientist or a politician? Just like WHO, is their main goal science? Or are they corrupted by the Chinese Communist Party?

I expected nothing less than such a superficial reply ramage.
From thinkingispower.com/science-and-its-pret...-and-science-denial/

The key difference between science and its pretenders is this: Whereas science is an objective search to understand and explain the natural world, science’s pretenders are motivated by their desire to protect cherished beliefs.

Fact check: CDC is withdrawing its PCR COVID-19 test, but not because it confuses viruses
CDC Updates and Shortens Recommended Isolation and Quarantine Period for General Population
Masks - of course cloth masks aren't as effective at others at preventing viral intake, we've always known that. The point was that in the beginning of the pandemic, there was a shortage of PPE for healthcare workers and the government didn't want a run on supplies like idiots did with toilet paper so they recommended cloth as an alternative that was better than nothing. Plenty of studies have come out since proving which are better, and they aren't hard to find. Trying to paint it as "changing the narrative" is disingenuous and pushing your own while ignoring the facts. The whole point of the OP I made.

FH, this isn't about one scientist, it's about the whole of science and all of the data.

Homeagain, yes she did, but this is about so much more than just COVID-19.

Putting aside the ad hominem attack, I am saddened that you use USA TODAY and its references to "experts" as your source. Evidently USA TODAY did not look at the state of Vermont, where the ER's are overwhelmed by people seeking confirmation of positive tests from the do -it-yourself at home Covid test, asking for the "gold standard" test recommended by the CDC until this week.

Regarding the CDC offering, the director Rochelle Walinsky, has stated that the decision to cut the quarantine time "“It really had a lot to do with what we thought people would be able to tolerate,” Walensky said." CNN.com 12/29/21
Perhaps she did not read the press release.

"so they recommended cloth as an alternative that was better than nothing." A statement grounded in science, to be sure.

Thinking is Power.
It's creator: "Trecek-King has a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry and a Master of Arts in Ecology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where she studied prairie ecology, succession, the role of fire in ecosystems, and habitat restoration."

Recall, that Galileo was forced to recant that the earth revolved around the sun by the "scientific experts" of the time. He did so rather than be tortured by being forced to wear a mask and quarantine.

Serendipity.
I came across this article in the WSJ after posting my comment with a reference to Galileo.

A very worthwhile read.

Without intentionally running afoul of the moderators, here are some excerpts:

www.wsj.com/articles/galileo-and-the-pan..._opin_pos_2#cxrecs_s

Early in the 17th century, a top cardinal warned Galileo that unless “there were a true demonstration that the sun,” not the Earth, “is at the center of the world,” he couldn’t teach his Copernican ideas publicly.

Then a plague hit Italy. Political borders closed and people stayed indoors. To make matters worse, the main sponsor of Galileo’s book in Rome died around this time. Because of these restrictions, Galileo decided to publish the book closer to home.

The book finally came out, but its revision process had been highly irregular. For example, as a revision request, Galileo had to write about the scientific impossibility to confirm the Copernican hypothesis—an idea held by Pope Urban. But Galileo decided to write it in such a way that the claim that Copernicanism couldn’t be proved came across as ridiculous. The pope felt betrayed on reading the book....the pope decided to react. “The Dialogue” was taken out of circulation, and Galileo abjured his ideas before the Roman Inquisition. He offered to write a final chapter softening his arguments, but it was too late.

Yet a major change in work habits under a stressful situation—and prolonged physical isolation from collaborators—will always have unforeseen consequences. It will take an uncommon level of vigilance and self-scrutiny, and an understanding of history, to help predict and avoid such problems

Here's to a better 2022 for all!
