Mexico has some of the most strict gun laws in the world. You can only legally buy weapons at one gun store in Mexico City and to get approval to buy a gun there is expensive and quite a process. So you don't see mass school shootings there, but you do see cartel violence, reporters killed, and many other deaths.
So maybe sometimes it is the culture, not the access to guns.

In the 1920's you could buy fully automatic weapons at your local hardware store, didn't see school shootings. In the 1950's, you could buy semiautomatic war surplus weapons through mail order. No background checks, and no mass school shootings.
What is the difference now? 24/7 media coverage?

Trudeau has proposed the effective elimination of handguns in Canada. A lot of smoke in that it is next to impossible to obtain a handgun legally in Canada. Long guns are a different story and to that end ,
he has proposed a 5 cartridge maximum magazine. If approved and signed into law be prepared for traffic jams on connections between Detroit and Windsor, Canada.

Meanwhile Slo Joe is talking about 9mm cartridges,

What is the ultimate goal of these administrations?

Canada is doing it the smart way. Slowly make it more and more difficult to keep your permissions to buy and keep guns. So some people just let them lapse. Other gun owners slowly die off and the guns are turned in. This new bill lets you keep your pistol but you can't sell it to anyone else. Even if they are legal to buy it.
But this really only affects good guys with guns. The bad guys can always import guns and ammunition with the drugs they import. Or they can manufacture new guns without serial numbers. The US-Canadian border is very porous. Plus easy to hide a container full of AK's in a steel shipment from China.

I think there's a much better description than "smart". Lets se how many Canadians get fed up with this step by step progression toward an authoritarian state... probably won't end well but at least we will be able to learn something from it.

I don't know. I have spent a lot of time talking with Canadians and while I have met a few who treasure their freedom, most are pretty brain washed. If they had fired Trudeau after two years of lockdown, I would have your optimism. Instead they really enjoy their nanny state.
