t’s that time of year when the best sheep shearers from around the world travel from ranch to ranch in Colorado shearing thousands of sheep during the annual wool harvest. Colorado is consistently one of the Top 5 wool producing states, producing more than 2 million pounds of fiber each year that is used in a wide variety of products, according to the Colorado Department of Agriculture.
We live about a 1/2 mile down the road from a sheep ranch,the shepherds tiny "hut" is mobile and is seen in several places across Montrose,about 3 weeks ago, I was watching the horse herd standing in the same direction,gazing intently on something. I look carefully and WHAT A SIGHT.....one truck in front leading a large herd of sheep down a secondary road (busy)and another behind to assure safety.....A MOVING COTTON FIELD.
We have been privileged to be in the middle of cow butts several times.....it's "Colorado cool ".....watching how ranchers work their animals.
When we would camp as kids on the Western Slope, almost every time we saw the Basque shepherds and their trailers.
There used to be a ranch near Como that raised sheep, they are restoring the home there. We used to buy our Limousine high altitude from them. A nice multicolored group of steers. As opposed to the Scottish Herefords that were very popular in South Park in the 70's or the Scottish Angus that replaced them in the 80's.
