The 14th Amendment was intended to give citizenship to former slaves and Native Americans. It was never intended to give citizenship to the children of foreign nationals who came to America to give birth.
So much progress so quickly!
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.
I'm always the most interested in hearing the leftist's argument on this subject. How do you justify giving citizenship to any baby (or clump of cells if you're a demon) that happens to be born while in our country?
Why is it that no other country on the planet has this ridiculous policy?
The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
Most of the countries in the Americas (both North and South) employ jus soli for citizenship. Anyone born in Canada, regardless of immigration status or nationality, is considered to be a Canadian citizen. Same with Mexico, Brazil, Argentina . . . there are quite a few actually.
Most of Europe, along with Israel, uses a combination of jus sanguinis and jus soli to determine citizenship, which is essentially what Trump is seeking via his executive order.
