Staffing levels at the airport’s control tower have been below adequate levels for years, like many of the U.S.’s other airports. DCA’s tower only had 19 fully certified controllers as of September 2023, according to congressional reports. This is well below the FAA and air traffic controller union’s preferred number of 30, and is due to employee turnover and budget cuts, according to the Times.
As a result, many air controllers at the airport work up to 10 hours a day and six days a week. Those levels probably have not been helped by Donald Trump’s federal hiring freeze, his gutting of the Aviation Security Advisory Committee, and the FAA chief’s resignation at Elon Musk’s behest. As much as Trump and the right might try to blame DEI or something else ludicrous, perhaps they should look in the mirror.

Do we not have ATC in the military? Is there a reason we can't supplement the civilian force with members of our military for such an important job if we're that short of workers? Look, I get staffing is a problem, but if the only answer emanating from the halls of government is "We need more money" at a time when our federal government is already spending over a trillion dollars more than it receives in revenue each year, the problem won't get solved, will it.
That's why I'm so glad to see Trump at the helm right now. We don't have enough ICE beds to detain the resident criminal aliens? OK, how do we solve that problem . . . hmmm . . . hey, let's use Gitmo to supplement the number of existing beds. It exists, its paid for, its staffed, its secure, and, perhaps most important, it allows us to take dangerous criminal aliens out of our communities.
That's called problem solving instead of the problem whining we've seen for the last 4 years. The solution to every problem isn't necessarily more government spending, more federal debt, but that's the only answer we're hearing from the halls of the federal government.
I don't recall Pete ever mentioning this problem. He had to know... right? If he knew, why wasn't it a #1 priority? My guess is that Duffy will actually do something, like the rest of Trump's crew.
A fact is information without emotion.
An opinion is information shaped by experience.
Ignorance is an opinion without knowledge.
Stupidity is an opinion the rejects facts.
That's called problem solving instead of the problem whining we've seen for the last 4 years. PER PS...
AHHH, perhaps u might want to amend that statement....it been a problem since REGAN....how many MORE years would that be?
"
...After the FAA changed its screening process in 2014, thousands of applicants who were already in the pipeline—people who had obtained an FAA-accredited degree, taken the AT-SAT exam and had been designated “well-qualified” to become air-traffic controllers—were told by the government that they would have to start the process again. “But this time, when they applied for a job, their college degrees and previous military experience would mean nothing,” reported Fox Business. “They would now compete with thousands of people the agency calls ‘off the street hires'; anyone who wants to, can walk in off the street without any previous training and apply for an air traffic control job.”
In other words, the current policy is to deliberately favor less-qualified applicants over more qualified applicants in the name of obtaining the “right” racial and gender mix among air-traffic controllers. "
Altho your article is specific and points out the deficient in the process......THE CONTROLLERS WERE NOT THE CAUSE OF THIS ACCIDENT....it was the military, perhaps we should look at the reason there was inadequate crew on board for this flight? BLACK HAWK TRAINING....SHOULD WE REVIEW THAT TOPIC?
