DIPLOMACY IS DEAD and so is the "deal"

At least the Oval Office meeting held by President Donald Trump and Vice President J. D. Vance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was held in front of the cameras. False friendliness in public by Trump and Vance, followed by behind-the-scenes treachery, would have been much more dangerous to the Ukrainian cause.

Instead, Trump and Vance have revealed to Americans and to America’s allies their alignment with Russia, and their animosity toward Ukraine in general and its president in particular. The truth is ugly, but it’s necessary to face it.

Today’s meeting gave the lie to any claim that this administration’s policy is driven by any strategic effort to advance the interests of the United States, however misguided. There is still time to see what is finally hammered out. Ukraine needs us more than we need Ukraine.
It would actually benefit the US to have Ukraine and Russia fighting for the next five years. (As long as we aren't paying for it.) Especially if Europe has to fund the defense of Ukraine, buying American weapons systems.

NJMO...BUT THE REAL ISSUE IS ....WAR....WE WILL BE ENTANGLED, REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE CZAR HAS STATED....GETTING OUT OF ANY WAR. NOT GOING TO BE THE REALITY ON THE GROUND.....WAIT FOR IT. HE IS NOT WIRED TO THINK IN TERMS OF A GLOBAL SOLUTION,AND ISOLATIONISM WILL NOT WORK.....WIDEN YOUR LENS TO SEE THE MACRO.

Making headway towards a return to “trade with all nations, entanglements with none” prior to Wilson, FDR, and the UN wouldn’t be an unwelcome policy shift from my perspective. Sure, we can never be an island, but alliances should be few and well chosen instead of global. Did it make sense in the wake of WWII for us to be the primary supporter of NATO while Europe was in shambles? Absolutely, but being the largest financial contributor to that organization should have ended in the 70s, maybe the 80s, certainly in the 90s. Same for the UN. Truthfully I’d like to see the headquarters for that vapid and corrupt organization located anywhere outside of our borders. Time for Europe, or Africa, hell, let’s stick the UN headquarters on Antarctica, to host the UN for a half century or so.
