CDC Director Nomination Withdrawn
A few days after he was elected, Trump nominated former Florida congressman and vaccine skeptic David Weldon, MDop, to lead the CDC, pledging that he would restore America's trust in the $9 billion agency.
But hours before Weldon was to go before the Senate for a confirmation hearing, the White House withdrew his namesaying Weldon didn't have the votes. Key lawmakers said they wouldn't support him because of his criticisms of childhood vaccination policies, and the belief he didn't really understand the agency and was unprepared for the job.
DOGE 'Justify Your Job' Emails Fall Off
In late February, federal healthcare workers received a weekend email from the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team asking them to respond with five bullet points of what they did that week. Initially, there was confusion as to whether the request was mandatory -- to which HHS initially replied it was voluntaryo. Eventually, though, it was adopted throughout the agency.
Over time, technical difficulties complicated the process, with employees receiving bounce-back emails that Office of Personnel Management inboxes were full, and the Washington Post reported last week that the bullet-point emails have generally gone by the waysideo. Indeed, NIH leadership ended the practiceo earlier this month.
FDA's Return-to-Office Cancelled
In mid-March, thousands of employees returned to FDA headquartersas part of the Trump's administration's return-to-office mandate. However, employees returned to "overflowing parking lots, long security lines, and makeshift office spaces without chairs and other basic supplies," according to the AP.
