I was only ten, have the scene of the helicopter taking off from the embassy imprinted.

I always wondered if it would have been better for the Vietnam to have lost instead and adopted capitalism and democracy. Capitalism eventually arrived.

I LIVED THRU IT,SAW IT IN REAL TIME......MCNAMARA IS THE PERSON U SHOULD ASK THAT QUESTION TO. HIS EGO PERPETUATE THE WAR AND IN RETROSPECT (MANY YEARS LATER ,IN HIS BIO) HE ADMITTED HOW HIS DECISIONS WERE WRONG AND THE REGRETS HE HAS FOR THE FALL AND THE FIASCO 'NAM. IT WAS A TIME IN HISTORY WHEN THE PEOPLE STOOD UP AND SAID NO MORE WAR....IT WAS TUMULTUOUS AND A TINDER BOX. THE MEDIA THEN DISCOVERED THAT REPORTING ''BODY COUNT' AND SHOWING GRAPHIC GORE WAS PROBABLY NOT A GOOD IDEA...BUT THE COVERAGE STOPPED THE STUPIDITY OF A NO WIN
DEATH CYCLE.

Little more complicated than just wanting to smear McNamara. We first supplied the French forces when they were trying to prevent Vietnam from becoming Communist. They gave up like the French often do. We then tried to defend South Vietnam from the communists, remember the falling dominoes theory? Eisenhower and Kennedy sending military advisors and then eventually ground troops. LBJ micro managing the war. Cronkite tells America Vietnam is hopeless. Soviets give money to American antiwar protesters, like they had done to French communist labor organizations to get France to abandon Vietnam.

Quite a complex chain of events, from 1945 to 1975.
