MY BROTHER 1955 year of birth.....we lived in Alaska and he would hop on his bike, yelling to mom.I'm
going riding with Pete....mom yells back, be back by suppertime.....they would explore hither and yon, fish, find cool stuff and the fear of the wilderness (bears, moose) was NOT even a fleeing thought for mom or my brother......no helmets, no gear, just some snacks and the day was THEIRS.....what that brought to him was self reliance,a sense of adventure and a keen interest in many topics. Stay at home moms were the norm and feminism was not yet a trend.....BUT, male dominant stance was the status quo.
so, some good ,some bad, but basically it gave children the freedom to discover their path thru life and navigate it with some autonomy. I am not advocating going back to the male dominance deal, i see the helicopter moms packing their children's lives with overwhelming activities and they can not be themselves and discover who they r. Exactly. Every decade had its good and bad points and culture isn't a monolith. Some children have helicopter parents but even right now many parents are pretty hands off raising their own children.
But personally I think I would much rather be living now than fifty or one hundred years ago. So many advances.
