The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) calls restorative reproductive medicine "a nonmedical approachopens in a new tab or window" that limits patients' fertility care options and overly focuses on endometriosis as the chief barrier to pregnancy, when infertility is known to have complicated and varied causes.

"Proponents of RRM [restorative reproductive medicine] advocate for policies that encourage a nonmedical and nonpatient-centered approach, discourage medical interventions, and establish barriers to evidence-based fertility care, thereby jeopardizing people's ability to start and grow their families," ACOG wrote. "Legislation that prioritizes RRM over evidence-based fertility treatment is an example of harmful interference in the practice of medicine."

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has also been sharply critical of the movement, noting that ideology, not medical practice, is what makes it distinct.

"The methodologies promoted under RRM are drawn from legitimate medical practices but have been selectively repackaged and distorted by political ideology," ASRM said in a fact sheetopens in a new tab or window issued last month. "This cherry-picking approach can delay access to proven care, prolong suffering, and increase financial and emotional burdens without improving outcomes."

The group also pointed out that restorative reproductive medicine "typically excludes IVF and related treatments on moral or religious grounds, not clinical evidence." Despite how some proponents may frame restorative reproductive medicine, there is no alternative to IVFopens in a new tab or window, fertility experts previously told MedPage Today.
