SPEAKS FOR ITSELF...SILENCE BROKEN ACCORDINGLY

Costa asked Meacham, "Are we in a particular time in America when all of this seems to keep happening?"

"We are, self-evidently," Meacham replied. "And I think it's because we are experiencing an era in which we are debating, not only the means of politics, but the purpose of politics."

Meacham says the purpose of America is an urgent cause for leaders, and for citizens: "When we lose the capacity to engage in argument and dissent and debate peaceably, we are breaking faith with the American covenant," he said. "And the American covenant is that we live in contention with each other, but we're not at each other's throats."

Asked what our political leaders can do to keep that covenant, Meacham said, "Make the case. Tell the story. What do you want the country to be? This is why history matters, I think, more than ever, because there's not a hell of a lot going on in the present that you want to say, 'Yeah, we want more of that,' right?

"You want to tell the story of Omaha Beach. You want to tell the story of the Pettus Bridge. You want to tell the story of Gettysburg. Because those were moments where imperfect people actually created a more perfect union. It's not that they were superhuman. Quite the opposite," he said.

They got through it, Meacham said, "barely."

But even if Americans can just barely carry on this weekend, Meacham says we must: "If they could do it, then we can, too, if we decide that this country is about a more perfect union, it is about dissent, it is about respecting each other, and it is not about hunting each other down."

I'm considering being more active on Facebook as I've read a lot of my Democrat friends making a lot of "both sides do it" arguments, when it comes to political violence. I'd like to do what Charlie did and ONLY debate people on the left. The cool thing about FB is the ability to speak to specific people I choose and leave the rest out of the conversation. I've counted 11 people out of 300+ who have made left wing political posts.... mostly about Hitler Trump of course.

I want to debate policies that the Democrats think are good for America and see how many people participate if they knew I had no right wing friends in the conversation to back me up. I'd love to do the same here if I could find more people on the left actually willing to debate policies instead of just unhinged "Trump is a dictator" bullshit.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

BTW, I'm confused about the subject line... who is breaking their silence?

Sadly I think both sides try to whip their followers into a frenzy and when you have people barely holding onto their sanity, going out in a blaze of glory can sound appealing.

So interesting to see years later when these same people realize they were lead astray and deeply regret the crimes they committed for political reasons.

For Jon Meacham, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, and author of "The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels," this past week has been disturbing — and all too familiar. Asked what is the state of America's soul today, he replied, "I think that we are in a dangerous place. There's never been a once-upon-a-time in American history. There's not going to be a happily-ever-after. But there are moments that you and I could agree we would like to see replicated — and this is not one of them.

"Political violence erupts in America when there is an existential question — who is an American? Who deserves to be included in 'We the people,' or 'All men being created equal'?" he said. "When that is in tension, when we don't have common agreement about that, then, if you look at it historically, violence erupts."

HERE'S A BEGINNING.....(BOLDED) WHO IS WE THE PEOPLE? JUST WHITE CHRISTIANS?
i DON'T READ THE BIBLE ,BUT I BELIEVE THERE IS A QUOTE THAT SAYS ''I GIVE U A NEW COMMAND....LOVE EACH OTHER,JUST AS I HAVE LOVED U,SO U JUST LOVE ONE ANOTHER,THIS IS HOW EVERYONE WILL KNOW THAT U R MY DISCIPLES''....JOHN 13:34-35

I DO NOT SEE THAT ACTION BEING FORTHCOMING FROM THIS ORGANIZATION/LEADER/
WIFE/POV.

I PURPOSELY POSTED A BAND/SINGER THAT R BEING SINGLED OUT.....ALL R CREATED EQUAL?
THAT IS NOT WHAT HAS BEEN THE AGENDA.....

You’ve obviously haven’t listened to everything she said and you certainly don’t have a lot of knowledge about what Charlie said (other than selective out of context soundbites). Educating yourself starts by doing your own research instead of your habit of letting other people speak for you.

Show me a Democrat or any self described Liberal/progressive who has ever engaged in a civil debate with conservatives in a public area where the media can’t edit the responses, like they love to do. Show me one.

This doesn’t happen because the liberal would be shredded with facts and would be too embarrassed to ever try it again. Liberals rely on their politicians and their media to lie for them so there is no need for an actual public debate.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

harles James Kirk, 31, died on Wednesday from a gunshot to the neck at a Utah Valley University campus event just as he was trying to deflect a question about mass shootings by suggesting they were largely a function of gang violence. He died with a net worth of $12 million, which he made by espousing horrific and bigoted views in the name of advancing Christian nationalism. The foundation of his empire was the group he cofounded and led, Turning Point USA, which is a key youth-recruitment arm of the MAGA movement. Kirk was able to launch Turning Point at the age of 18 because he received money from Tea Party member Bill Montgomery, right-wing donor Foster Feiss, and his own father, also a prolific right-wing donor. He was an unrepentant racist, transphobe, homophobe, and misogynist who often wrapped his bigotry in Bible verses because there was no other way to pretend that it was morally correct. He had children, as do many vile people.

It is rude of me to say all of this, because we live in a culture where manners are often valued more than truth. That is why a slew of pundits and politicians have raced to portray Kirk’s activities, which harmed many vulnerable people, in a positive light—and to give him the benefit of the doubt that he did not grant to anyone who wasn’t white, Christian, straight, and male.

OVER 150 YEARS OF JOURNALISM.....YA,I DO MY RESEARCH....THIS PAPER IS NOT OWNED BY BIG CORP......IT IS INDEPENDENT

When asked about mass shootings he said, “I think it’s worth it. I think it’s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year, so that we can have the Second Amendment.” Perhaps Kirk did not believe that his own life would be cut short by gun violence, but, like the rest of us, he has witnessed countless school shootings. When he said “some gun deaths” are acceptable, he surely knew he lived in a country where the deaths he deemed acceptable included those of children, some of whom were the age of his own. There is no inherent virtue in caring about your own children; that is the bare minimum requirement for effective parenting. Virtue lies in caring about the safety and well-being of children you don’t know.

According to Democrats themselves, gun homicides have been declining for decades,

You child is much more likely to die from a drug overdose than a school shooting.

The latest school shooting in Evergreen? The only death was the shooter himself.

You do anything but research, HA. Copying and pasting someone else’s OPINIONS is not research. Research would be actually listening to Charlie’s debates. There was nothing racist, homophobic, transphobic, or misogynistic about him. Not agreeing with a lifestyle does not mean you hate that person or wish that person harm. I’ll have to search for it, but I saw a video of him debating with a guy who said he was a conservative but was anti-gay (or he was a leftist pretending to be a conservative)… anyway, Charlie told him straight up that he was not welcome and that he disagreed with his hatred of gay people.

If you want to make a point with some credibility, why not post Charlie talking in FULL CONTEXT? Instead, you pick some moron writer who hates people like Charlie. Nothing ever changes with you.
