Trump has for months suggested every American could receive a $2,000 dividend from the import taxes — an effort that seemed designed to try to shore up support for tariffs, which the president has said protect American industries and will lure manufacturing back from overseas.

But that particular pledge appeared to exceed the revenues being generated by his tariffs, according to a November analysis by the right-leaning Tax Foundation. The analysis estimated that the $2,000 payments being promised to taxpayers could add up to between $279.8 billion and $606.8 billion, depending on how they were structured.

The analysis estimated that Trump’s import taxes would produce $158.4 billion in total revenue during 2025 and another $207.5 billion in 2026. That’s not enough money to provide the payments as well as reduce the budget deficit, which Trump has also claimed his tariffs are doing.

Often, a big showy announcement like $1776 or $2,000 promises will stimulate the economy much more than pouring money down a black hole of "military housing subsidies".

I can imagine young soldiers heading down to their local car dealers, $1776 down payments on that new Camaro or Hellcat.
Or the Sergeant who will spend $2,000 on new toys and clothes for his kids.

Ask and yee shall receive . . .

The money comes not from tariffs but from $2.9 billion that Congress appropriated in the "big, beautiful bill" to the Department of War to supplement the Basic Allowance for Housing entitlement.

Additionally, the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) authorized a 3.8% raise for basic military pay for all service members in 2026.

The annual defense policy bill also includes a suite of quality-of-life enhancements designed to support service members and their families. Lawmakers authorized a 60% increase in the Family Separation Allowance, raising it to $400 per month for troops separated from their dependents, and directed studies aimed at improving how housing and subsistence allowances are calculated to better reflect real-world costs.

The legislation funds expanded childcare programs, including extensions of in-home childcare assistance, and boosts resources for spouse employment support, housing condition evaluations and mental health care access. It also provides for increased educational impact aid for military-connected students and additional support for families facing relocation or deployment challenges.

The new measures come after years of documented quality-of-life challenges inside the military, from rising housing costs and shortages of childcare to persistent issues with pay, barracks conditions and family support, problems lawmakers say these initiatives are designed to begin addressing.
