As the population ages, expect more people to retire and head south.

We never wanted to do that. I thought about wintering in Salida but it got too popular.

WELL, Montrose is becoming Grand Junction....not alot of new big box stores,but they r coming. Amazon
erected their 'last mile' facility,chipotle is coming ....and so r newcomers to this rural,agri. culture little town...not so little...been here 11 years....crowded now.

With remote work, I hope rural areas can stay viable. Sad to see the small farming towns in Nebraska and Kansas becoming ghost towns.

Interestingly I am driving from the CO border, through KS, to MO. These towns that you bemoan exist because of the Railroad. The RR is no long viable and neither are these towns, however "quaint" you may find them. The family farms that are present rely on automotive transportation and these farmers are well educated and understand that medical care, lawyers for complex inheritance issues , etc. are not found in small towns.
Sorry, but that is what we now call progress.

"Sorry, but that is what we now call progress" YA, UNFORTUNATELY, if u around long enough in one place, u see HUGE change. 3RD GEN COLORADAN HERE...I do not recognize my home state anymore...it has morphed into another California....when TRADER JOES' finally arrived here (and the demand for wines,beer in grocery stores became a reality ..I saw the essence of Colorado disappear.,u
can not hike a popular trail without a reservation...per my Aspen neighbor,who retired here in Montrose...
they lived in Aspen,BEFORE it became the trendy trap for the rich. AS FOR PACK IT IN, THEN PACK IT OUT......NON existent. No regard for the beauty of the state,just use it and abuse it. jmo
