St. Francis challenged the caliphate back during the crusades.
He challenged the Muslims to burn him --- if he remained alive, they would accept Christianity.
If he died - they would continue with their own beliefs.
The caliphate refused the offer, though - but admired Francis' faith. To this day, the Franciscan order is the most respected order in the Middle East.
