It became internationally notorious when, on November 18, 1978, 918 people died in the settlement as well as in a nearby airstrip and in Georgetown, Guyana's capital. The name of the settlement became synonymous with the incidents at those locations.
A total of 909 Temple members died in Jonestown, all but two from apparent cyanide poisoning, in an event termed "revolutionary suicide" by Jones and some members on an audio tape of the event and in prior discussions.

In the early 1970s the Peoples Temple opened other branches in California, including in Los Angeles and San Francisco. In the mid-1970s, the Temple moved its headquarters to San Francisco.[9]
After the Temple's move to San Francisco, it became more politically active. After Peoples Temple participation proved instrumental in the mayoral election victory of George Moscone in 1975, Moscone appointed Jones as the Chairman of the San Francisco Housing Authority Commission.[10] Unlike other figures considered as cult leaders, Jones enjoyed public support and contact with some of the highest level politicians in the United States. For example, Jones met with Vice Presidential Candidate Walter Mondale and Rosalynn Carter several times.[11] Governor Jerry Brown, Lieutenant Governor Mervyn Dymally and Assemblyman Willie Brown, among others, attended a large testimonial dinner in honor of Jones in September 1976.[12]

One day later, on Sunday February 19, 1978, Harvey Milk wrote a letter of support for the Peoples Temple to President Jimmy Carter.[83] Milk wrote that Jones was known "as a man of the highest character".[83] Regarding defecting Temple members pressing for an investigation of the Peoples Temple, Milk wrote "they are attempting to damage Rev. Jones' reputation" with "apparent bold-faced lies".[83]

n 1973 the San Francisco Examiner briefly ran articles critical of the Temple. However, Jones' political machine continues to garner him influence by helping to elect Mayor Moscone, District Attorney Joseph Freitas and Sheriff Richard Hongisto in 1975.

And Jones was still spreading money around to seemingly buy influence. A writer for the San Francisco Chronicle wrote in 1976, "Many a San Franciscan and many a project have received sizable checks from Peoples Temple, accompanied by only a short note from Jim Jones, saying, `We appreciate what you are doing,' ''

Jones gave money to the NAACP, the Ecumenical Peace Institute and a senior citizens escort service. Willie Brown and then-Governor Jerry Brown could be seen at his church services, apparently paying homage to their friend.

Found near Maria Katsaris' body was a handwritten note signed by Katsaris, dated November 18, 1978, witnessed by Jim McElvane and Marilee Bogue, stating, "I Maria Katsaris leave all of the money in the Banco Union de Venezuela in Caracas to the Communist Party Soviet Union."[156]
Found near Carolyn Layton's body was a handwritten note signed by Carolyn Layton, witnessed by Maria Katsaris and Annie Moore, dated November 18, 1978, stating, "This is my last will and testament. I hereby leave all assets in any bank account to which I am a signatory to the Communist Party of the U.S.S.R."[157]

And California wonders why they keep gong backwards. They will never change. I am finally for letting them become tier own country. Their costs far outweigh their benefits to our economy and government. And they keep voting it in so let them go their own way. San Diego can join Arizona.

California is finished. The have a twenty billion dollar defict and twenty billion dollars of unfunded Pension liabilities for at least forty billion in deficits. Their proposed budget assumes five billion in Federal Aid. Read Bailout by the taxpayers. The people have stated that they dont want anymore bailouts. The Republicans that took over the House have agreed with them. Pelosi is gone. She cant hepl them. The voters in California keep electing the people who support the Unions. Its State Legislature and now its Governor support them . Fifty percent of its State revenue goes to suport the Public Sector. With no bailouts there will have to be some drastic changes or they will be a Third world Country.

If the new Republican House doesn't fund the five billion - California is screwed. Sucks for Colorado...as they abandon California they stop in Colorado. No jobs in Nevada and we all know how much they hate Utah. Oops.

Governor moonbeam did a lot of damage to the state of California way back when, and he will do more now.

I just wish we could stop the liberal's coming from there to escape the damage - from coming to Colorado and doing the same thing.

The only thing that can be done...and the right thing....give California back to Mexico. That would cut our illegal immigration problem in half.
