I think the blame game will be played out for some time. Might be better to focus on plugging the hole first. I am sure Henry Waxman is drooling about his upcoming grilling sessions in Congress.

I didn't see anything in the article about the dates that permits were approved and drilling started on this project.

The Energy Bill of 2005 "Bush's 2005 energy bill officially dropped the requirement for the acoustic switch off devices" I am assuming this bill had to be passed by congress, not just Bush/Cheney.

Sounds like these acoustic safety devices should have been required? Especially for deep wells. I am sure they will be now -Mr Monday morning Quarterback ( the guy who wrote the article)!

I do hope they can plug the hole and BP should be held accountable 100%. Plug baby plug!

Seems to me that there is blame t be spread all over, The interesting part to me is that nobody ( gov or BP) had a contingency for this. Taxes or profits should pay, somehow there should be responsibility

But the Week was just reporting last week the Obama/Biden have just approved over a dozen new drilling permits out in the Gulf with exemptions on this stuff so it will be interesting if that news makes it to those hearings.

I heard the exact opposite. I heard they have put a temporary stop to all permits. Who knows what to believe now a days. Each media outlet has it's own agenda

JMC, I think this is going to be discussed alot. I am no expert in oil drilling, but have worked on hi rel systems that are fail safe (by design), triple redundant, etc in electronics, power plants, etc. In the case of deep oil wells, it seems almost comparable to a Nuke power plant or a Volcano. Containment or contingency after the fact is impossible I think. So it seems that it needs to be 100% fail safe, if you believe that is possible. With good engineering it is possible to get very very close to 100% with auto controls and trained operators. Doesn't seem like it happened here. A fail safe system would have closed one or more redundant valves in the absence of a control signal, after the explosion on the surface. Again, I am no drilling expert and this is over-simplifying it.

Yes, we FINALLY, went to the coast, but had to get back to D.C. to see paul mCcarthy. ONLY TOOK HIM 45days. That’s ok. He was busy screwing up the country.
