Preparing for a future Mars mission, a group plans to spend 520 days in isolation, simulating a trip to Mars. It's funny what happened to the last people who tried this... (it's in the story):
I am a pretty solitary person, at least my wife says so, but I would go mad living that way.
I wouldn't even telecommute if I had the opportunity. I don't think most people could survive like that.
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.
Not a chance. I am way too much of a people person. The Solitude would drive me crazy! I often thought of that man in Alaska who went and built a cabin and lived alone for 32 or so years. Not sure how he did it. I love that documentary though. Alone in the Wilderness.
I seem to get more "hermit-y" the older I get. (Either that or I just don't like that many people..... :Whistle ) Bhuddist retreats are different in that you're silent for the whole time but there are still people around, so you're not in solitary. Don't think I could go a year and a half with no contact, though. What do you get to take with you? Books? Knitting? Snacks?

Agreed, I could do it no problem, if my wiffie was with me.
Of course, we'd have some really good fight (verbal), like "Why can't you just close the top to the siphon hose?"
If you've seen how the WC works, you'll get this... if not look it up.
