Woman Dies After Medicaid Program Outsourced To Private Insurers Denies Her Liver Transplant

One of the most destructive practices of private health insurance companies is the practice of denying care to customers for frivolous reasons. Earlier this year, the Department of Health and Human Services started including denial rates on its information section about health insurance companies on HealthCare.gov, in an effort to inform the public about this practice by the industry.

It was this practice of frivolous denials that ended up costing Jacksonville, Florida woman Alisa Wilson her life. For months, Wilson, her family, and the surrounding community had been pleading with her HMO to approve coverage for a liver transplant. Although Wilson was enrolled in the state’s Medicaid program, she was not guaranteed care because she was “forced to join a private plan as part of a Gov. Jeb Bush-era experimental overhaul of the program,” meaning she had to deal with a private, for-profit insurance company to get her care, not a government agency accountable to the public.

Yes, Martha, there ARE "death-panels"... They are run by insurance companies, and pukes like Jan Brewer, and Jeb Bush. Here is your budget-cutting "compassionate conservatism."

Well, it was her own fault... A) She shouldn't have gotten sick; B) She shouldn't have needed to depend on Medicaid; C) She shouldn't have lived in Florida, where she was subject to the cost-cutting slime like Jeb Bush.

If that story is as reported, then I hope that company pays a huge price.

But you are really streaching it by using one tragedy to make a political point and accuse others of being "slime".

It's not too hard to find similar things happing in Medicare too...

Paula Oertel, whose brain tumor disappeared for nine years while she was on an expensive drug and returned after she temporarily lost her insurance coverage, has died as a result of the tumor spreading through her brain.

The interruption of her Medicare coverage of the drug directly contributed to her death, contends her doctor, Mark Malkin, chief of neuro-oncology at Froedtert Hospital.

"It had everything to do with her dying," Malkin said. "If the bureaucrats who run Medicare and Medicaid had not allowed her coverage to lapse, she'd still be alive. It's a tragedy."

And the AMA does a detailed yearly study on medical care by private insurers and Medicare. So far as denials of coverage goes, Medicare has been rated the highest denier of coverage, or second highest the last 3 years...

Just think, if Medicare or Medicard paid for every major transplant....we are assured of going bankrupt, since every libtards requires a brain transplant. Now, I am torn. Do I support Obamacare so libtards get brain transplants or my wallet gets transplanted...

Back to the story, I don't think taxpayers should pay for liver transplants. Why didn't her friends, family, and all the libtards come together and raise money for her health care instead of taxing taxpayers? Funny how liberals are outraged - after the fact.

Well, first they would have to find a conservative that actually HAD a brain, not an easy task.
