Imagine A Saturday Without Mail

5-Day At A Glance

When these reports first started surfacing, they were talking that the day off would vary locally depending on which day tended to be slowest for that individual location. It seems that they are now settling on Saturdays nationally. When I see arguments against dropping it that include "I'd miss seeing my mail carrier on weekends", I laugh. "resident Bill Webb ...says many in his South L.A. neighborhood would miss their beloved letter carrier on the weekends." (from CG's NPR article)

I'm hoping that this spurs Netflix to increase their selection of On-Demand/Watch Instantly videos; waiting for them to get through the mail is a waste of time anyway. If you need a check or Rx, then go pick it up or schedule it more efficiently ahead of time - it shouldn't be that critical to get it on That day.

"Yeah, that" on the Netflix thing. Their online selection is woefully deficient.

Keep in mind we have a govt. to take care of what we cannot take care of ourselves (or at least we used to). I know this will sound odd to the 285 corridor, which like big gov and likes replacing the private economy with govt. services, but the private economy can always serve you better, at the right price, even if higher, it is the right price.

Let's see, private company (fedex) charges $6.93 for 3 day delivery within Colorado, USPS charges $.44 for the same service. so much for the efficiencies of private companies.

Yes, but the PO is overbudget by massive amounts. So what is the real cost for that 3 day delivery?

The USPS has an estimated budget shortfall of $7 billion for next year (about $3 billion per year) and estimated that raising postage rates by $.02 would raise $2.3 billion. It handles about 170 billion pieces of mail per year, so if their rates were raised to $.50, less than 7 percent of private companies charges, they would be well above a surplus.

I just read in Kiplingers that the budget loss this year alone was 8.5 billion. So they would have to raise it more than that. Of course, if you raise it, the # of packages will go down, so you are dealing with diminishing returns....

Our "broadband" won't always support streaming. Thank you Qwest.

Darn that inefficiency of Netflix. If they got it under control Scruffy and CKM might have something else to keep them entertained.

Even so, their cost per piece of mail would still be much less than the "more efficient" private companies. At most, raising the price to $.50 - .60 to put them back in the black compared with $6.83 by Fedex. Postal mail is still an enormous bargain compared to the cost of other services.
