Are you OK with all these new taxes to save newspapers.

They are talking about a three percent (3%) tax on monthly cell phone bills to help newspapers and traditional journalism. And a proposed five percent tax on the purchase of consumer electronic items such as computers, iPads and Kindles to help support newspapers and traditional journalism. And a proposed tax on web sites like the Drudge Report to help the newspapers they draw their headlines from. And a tax on monthly cell phone bills to help newspapers and traditional journalism.

So are you OK with all of these new taxes to try and save the newpaper and traditional journalism industry, or is it just the evolution of news and how capitalism works. Hey, businesses and industries come and go. If one is outdated, should we all pay higher taxes on other items and news outlets to try and save something that is no longer as viable as it once was?

No, I'm not. Let the old die. If they can't come up with a business model that's profitable, they should stop the presses and go home.

It will make it official that "some" newspapers are state run.

Or like taxing the telephone to save the telegraph. Or taxing DVD players extra to save VHS players.

Against them. Don't get me wrong, I love my daily paper, but there are much more enviromental ways to bring the news to people than cutting down a forest every day of the week. And to subsidize this destruction is just plain wrong.

BTW, both Japan and France have a long tradition of goverment subsidies. How objective does that make the press?
