Engineers urge government to act now to 'climate-proof' UK infrastructure

The engineers said all of the country's infrastructure could be rendered more resilient to the probable effects of climate change, but this would require new regulations from the government.

Pavements and road surfaces might also have to be changed, as the UK's current road system has not been built to withstand high temperatures.

Everyone needs a piece of the global warming pie, otherwise you may be left out in the cold. When the roads can take more heat, what about the tires? Perhaps they need to be climate-proofed as well.

As if we didn't already have an overwhelming list of infrastructure challenges. How many ways can you spell cha ching?

COncerns about roads withstanding higher temperatures is a misplaced priority all things considered. Whether you believe in global warming or not the inescapable fact is sea level has been rising since the last ice age. Interglacial to glacial times have seen sea level fluctuate by hundreds of feet. The remaining ice sheet potentially will add enough water to the oceans to flood low lying areas (50-100 feet above present sea level). What good will roads do when they are submerged? A bigger priority ought to be relocating or encouraging the relocation of people in these areas to places that will remain dry once all the ice is melted. The same goes for businesses. Perhaps the infrastructure revisions engineers should consider is how to make trains into submarines?
