Jeffco's historic Boettcher Mansion is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary on July 27, 2017.
In 1917, Colorado business entrepreneur Charles Boettcher commissioned Denver architects Fisher & Fisher to design and build a secluded retreat atop Lookout Mountain for use as a summer home and hunting lodge. Since his Ideal Cement Company had recently donated enough concrete to pave the winding road that led from downtown Golden up to the summit, Charles was familiar with the area and when plans for a 60-acre mountaintop resort fell through, he jumped at the chance to purchase such a prime parcel of land.
Built of native stone and timber culled from the property, “Lorraine Lodge” was enjoyed by family members for more than 50 years (with Charles’ granddaughter raising her three children here during the 1960s). Upon Charline Breeden’s death in 1972, the estate was donated to Jefferson County for “public use and enjoyment”. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places - NPS in 1984, the Arts & Crafts landmark is significant for its vernacular architecture, its connections to the Boettcher legacy within Colorado and as a superlative example of adaptive reuse.
Today, the Boettcher Mansion serves as Jefferson County’s premier events site hosting hundreds of social gatherings and business meetings each year. While winter is a surprisingly popular time for weddings and other festive galas, the Mansion’s official birthday party will take place midsummer, on July 27, 2017.

1917 was a big year for Lookout Mountain. Three years after Denver Mountain parks was established, attracting more tourists into the foothills, Charles Boettcher commissioned the construction of a summer home, now the Boettcher Mansion.
“Coming up on 2017 we’ve been excited for quite some time,” said Cynthia Shaw, director of the mansion. “We just really want to show off this amazing estate and also publicize the fact that we’ve been able to turn a 100-year-old building into a modern-day special events venue.”
The 100th anniversary will be celebrated later this year with a public party with activities throughout the mansion and property.
A nearby neighbor is also hitting a centennial landmark this year: Buffalo Bill’s Museum and Grave will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of its namesake and his famous funeral procession up the mountain with events throughout the year.
