The Swimming of the Ponies

"Three minutes are all they need. Each year, on the last Wednesday in July, 150 ponies and their foals set off from the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island. Scrutinized by more than 40,000 spectators, “saltwater cowboys” will marshal them across a narrow stretch of water to Chincoteague Island, Va., and then parade them through Chincoteague to their corral at the carnival grounds, where they are given a thorough vet check and food and water. The auction for the foals takes place the following day. On Friday, the grown stallions and mares—and the half-dozen foals that fans have bought to donate back to the herd—make the return swim to 37-mile-long, pristine Assateague."
