Win $50! 2015 Greenhouse Photo Contest

The Platte Canyon Area Chamber of Commerce and Moore Lumber & Ace Hardware are kicking off the gardening season with a Greenhouse Photo Contest. The contest is in conjunction with the chamber’s monthly Platte Canyon University (PCU) class series. Dr. Peter Braun will facilitate a discussion on greenhouses at high altitude at the next PCU class on March 18 starting at 6:30 at the Platte Canyon Fire Station, located at the top of Crow Hill on Highway 285. A representative from Moore Lumber & Ace Hardware will also be present to answer questions on greenhouse construction, supplies, and maintenance. All proceeds from the class will be donated to the Platte Canyon Fire Station. Admission is $10.00 per person.

In February, the chamber held a High Altitude Gardening Class led by the High Altitude Gardening Society (HAGS) with support from Moore Lumber & Ace Hardware. The chamber is working to help purchase a greenhouse for Deer Creek Elementary School and donated $570 raised from the class admission toward this cause. The Platte Canyon School District has also applied for a $2000 grant from the Grant for Knowledge Foundation to help fund their project. “This is truly a team community effort,” said Pat Davis, Vice President of the Platte Canyon Area Chamber of Commerce.

Photo submissions for the contest should be dropped off at Moore Lumber & Ace Hardware, 186 Mount Evans Boulevard in Pine or 5195 County Road 64 in Bailey, with name, address, greenhouse size, and contact information written on the back of the photo. Judges will select the winning entries by those that best showcase a high altitude greenhouse. Submissions will be displayed at Moore Lumber & Ace Hardware’s Pine and Bailey stores and during the PCU class at the Platte Canyon Fire Station, as well as possibly on social media sites and local newspapers. Judges will select one winner in each of three categories based on the size of the greenhouse: Up to 40 square feet, 40 to 120 square feet, and greater than 120 square feet. Each winner will receive a $50 Moore Lumber & Ace Hardware gift certificate.

The deadline for entries is March 15, 2015. A representative from Moore Lumber & Ace Hardware will announce the winners at the PCU class on March 18. Official rules are available at Moore Lumber & Ace Hardware’s Pine location.
