Our West Slope Summer- Outreach & Outdoors
date posted: July 19th, 2011 | posted by: Zachariah

Looking ahead to the rest of the summer I am personally very excited to be moving our outreach into the great outdoors. We are planning a new hiking series out of Grand Junction to highlight a number of the region’s Citizen Wilderness Proposal areas (CWPs). Since the late 1950s Colorado citizens have been hiking into uncharted public wild lands to map and catalog areas deemed worthy of protection.

There are presently 62 similar citizen proposal areas encompassing over 1,650,000 acres in Colorado that are seeking protection. We are aiming to explore and share five of them, including South Shale Ridge and Hunter Canyon, between the end of August and beginning of November.

And, we are looking for the next generation of involved citizens to join us for these outings. By simply visiting, taking pictures, and sharing your experience you can help preserve the wilderness of the future. August 27th is the tentative date for our first outing when we venture to Oil Spring Mountain in northwest Colorado near the Utah border. I look forward to seeing you during the second half of our summer of outreach, at the table or on the trail. As always, call or email me at the West Slope Field Office for more information.

What We Do

Every year, CEC inspires thousands of organizations and individuals who, like you, care deeply about Colorado. We work on a variety of issues that span the state and include protecting our public lands, ensuring the quality of the water we drink, preserving wildlife habitat and opportunities for recreation, advocating for good transportation and growth practices, promoting common sense policies in the state legislature, and providing technology resources to other non-profits.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
