Canyon Courier: Wildflowers peek out through spring snowstorms

Once more, I awakened to a white world. Yesterday, the landscape was offering green lawns in Lakewood and the foothills were starting to show green, small leaves just beginning to be seen between the dry gray-brown grasses. Snow overnight had changed this all to white again.

We live in a magical place called Evergreen, where one can quickly drive to the short grass prairie to the east or even more quickly by the Mount Evans Highway to more than 14,000 feet. In the middle ground, where we are mostly between 7,000 and 8,000 feet, we experience erratic weather. This has little effect on the arrival of spring birds and flowers because the intense sun one day makes up for the snow the next day. A severe snowstorm may make migrants arrive within a day or two, but they still arrive fairly on schedule.
