Succinct and absolutely accurate. There are many times when simply turning around is the only correct action. The mountain will be there tomorrow (or next weekend). We would rather you do that than you have to call us in an emergency. We certainly will respond, of course, and there is no charge for it. Your safety is the most important thing - so never delay calling 9-1-1 because you think there will be a bill from us.

Lightning strikes, heart attacks, rockfall injuries and avalanches — these are just a few maladies that strike would-be hikers, climbers and mountaineers when they push on despite the warning signs and forget uber-climber Ed Viesturs’ cardinal rule: getting the summit is optional, getting down is mandatory.

So here are seven signs it’s time to bail on a summit bid…

  1. When the mountain says no.
  2. When the weather says no.
  3. When your skill level says no.
  4. When your body says no.
  5. When your partners say no.
  6. When your preparations say no.
  7. When a combination of those first six items say no.
