Did you know today is Squirrel Appreciation Day? Well, here are some fun facts for you from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service!

1. Squirrels can find food buried beneath a foot of snow.

2. Common gray squirrels are in the same family (Sciuridae) as chipmunks, marmots, flying squirrels, ground squirrels & prairie dogs.

3. Delmarva fox squirrels descend a tree and travel on the ground to the next tree (instead of jumping). The species was recently delisted due to recovery!

4. The Endangered Mount Graham red squirrel is only found in the wild Pinaleno Mountains of southeastern Arizona.

5. West Virginia northern flying squirrels glide in the air on a parachute created when they stretch all four legs.

6. Washington ground squirrels are only active when grasses are green-- about 1/3 of the year.

7. Douglas squirrels mostly eat seeds of coniferous trees, like the Douglas fir. They peel off each scale, discarding the scale and removing the seed.

8. Tree squirrels bury acorns in the ground to store food for winter. The ones they forget grow into oak trees!

9. Arctic ground squirrels hibernate 5-8 feet underground from September to May.
