Help Sept. 11th with the THISTLE DO

This has been a banner year for thistle proliferation throughout the mountain area. Anyone who walks Evergreen Lake or attends the lake concerts may have noticed how these noxious weeds are threatening the health and welfare of the wetlands, not to mention how unsightly they have made the focal point of our community.

Evergreen Audubon is seeking 50+ volunteers for the THISTLE DO on Sunday, September 11th, a National Day of Service. In honor of Sylvia Brockner who fought to protect the wetlands when the Lake House was built, we are attacking the thistles and knapweed in force! Sylvia will turn 97 next month and was just inducted into the Jefferson County Hall of Fame for her conservation work locally.

Please join us at 8:00, 9:00, or 10:00 for a 2-hour volunteer commitment. Come earlier for breakfast-like refreshments, and be ready for instructions on the hour. Teams will charge the battlefield with leaders who are knowledgeable about what to do.

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE: long-sleeve shirts and long pants, heavy gloves. (Boots not necessary -- wetlands are quite dry right now.) Come armed with your own pruners if you have them. And bring your own water bottle!

Even if you can't bend over and cut, we need volunteers to hold the bags for those who can.

If you cannot attend, do your part in your own neighborhood and on the paths where you walk -- cut the seed heads of thistles and knapweed, and encourage your respective HOAs to take action next May and again at the end of summer.
