Capone is on board for COWBOYS & ALIENS genre-bending ride!!!
Published at: Jul 27, 2011

But here's the biggest secret about COWBOYS & ALIENS: it's actually a really great Western that is in many ways sidetracked by the alien elements. Don't get me wrong, the alien stuff is fun, but this tale of a man with memory loss wandering into a small town and butting heads with local law enforcement and cattle mogul Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford in full-on gruff mode) is actually compelling enough to sustain it's own film. Actually, much of the first 30 minutes of the film plays out with Craig saying almost nothing, making him all the more intriguing.

COWBOYS & ALIENS has great lead actors in Craig, Ford, and Wilde, but its heart and soul belongs to the supporting players, all of whom give us a sense of what's important to folks at this time in history. There are a couple of conversations between a preacher (Clancy Brown) and the town saloon owner, Doc (Sam Rockwell), about the importance of faith that provide an undercurrent of strength and motivation to the entire film.

Massawyrm digs COWBOYS & ALIENS

It is, from the outset, a mean, ballsy, fun genre mashup that feels very much like the films of the Seventies and Eighties. The character development is brisk and slick, and the setup leaves you at the end of act one with the promise of one of two films – and the question as to whether you love this or not depends very much upon what you want out of it once the aliens show up. One possibility is a dark, gritty, Carpenteresque film loaded with anti-heroes; the other is a fun, popcorn chomping romp that makes safe, mainstream choices instead of risky ones. Weighing in at a reported $163 Million, you can probably guess which version of the film they went for.

The film is loaded with great characters, each portrayed by a top notch actor, with even the small, most thankless roles filled out with incredible talent. When Craig and Ford aren’t giving it their all, we get Keith Carradine, Clancy Brown, Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano, and Adam Beach all in top form, doing what each does best.

This is a summer film with soul. But it is neither a deep message nor a subtle one. And at the end of the day, that proves to be the final nail in the coffin for many.

Nordling Wanted More From COWBOYS & ALIENS!
Published at: Jul 29, 2011

COWBOYS & ALIENS runs hot and cold. There's enough terrific imagery and action that I think most audiences will enjoy it, but the film feels like there's something missing and that it could have been so much more.

I really have enjoyed her in House and Tron, and I hear there's a twist with her character in this - looking forward to it!

Capone talks career and COWBOYS (& ALIENS) with Olivia Wilde!!!
Published at: Jul 26, 2011

The first of the four interviews I'm going to post is with the busiest woman in show business, Olivia Wilde, whom I had just met a couple months ago on the set of an indie she made with Eric Bana called BLACKBIRD. At both meetings, I was immediately struck by Wilde's poise, intelligence, clear sense of her craft, and inner geek. And, in a certain light, I can see how some people might find her drop-dead gorgeous.

In the film, she plays the mysterious Ella, who seems to know more about the identity and history of Daniel Craig's character than he does. We had a great time picking her brain about COWBOYS & ALIENS and her career path in general. Keep in mind that not all of the questions are mine, but I think you'll enjoy our conversation with Olivia Wilde…

"What the h*!!…?" Capone spends a few minutes talking COWBOYS & ALIENS with Harrison Ford!!!
Published at: Jul 27, 2011

...here's something you may not realize. I'm 99 percent sure that Ford had a lot of fun making COWBOYS & ALIENS. He got to be outdoors, on a horse, doing what he does best, which is being a great action star. As much as Ford tends to avoid questions about older films and characters he's played that have become part of the iconography of movies, I think he enjoyed making this film with director Jon Favreau because he wants audiences to remember what he can do in a movie like this. Ford may be our greatest living action stars, and he seems to get an extra kick when he has an opportunity like this to prove it.

Me and a small group of online writers met with Ford in Montana recently to discuss his work in COWBOYS & ALIENS as well as Westerns as an art form. He was downright charming at times, but tended to shut the conversation down if older works were mentioned. It still turned out to be a lot of fun to talk with him. Please enjoy Harrison Ford…

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
