So it looks like Disney's pulled the plug on THE LONE RANGER. THE LONE RANGER wasn't small potatoes in comparison to those other titles - Johnny Depp probably brings in more box office than Brad Pitt these days, and the two were going head-to-head on December 21st, 2012. It sounds like it could have been budget issues. I can't imagine a Western would need a very big budget but with Gore Verbinski directing and Depp starring, the price tag was likely a hefty one.
It's unfortunate as I think the casting was good, the director's established, and since it seemed like they were going to the roots of the original story, I think audiences would have come. No word on whether Disney will return to the film, but putting a stop to a Jerry Bruckheimer film is a pretty bold move, and I'm sure there will be repercussions with Bruckheimer and Disney because of it.
Our good friend Drew McWeeny has scored the exclusive - HitFix reports tonight that Steve Kloves and David Yates are teaming up again after the success of HARRY POTTER to adapt Stephen King's seminal work, THE STAND for the screen, in a multi-film series. Now that's a team up I can root for. Kloves got to the heart of the Potter books and for him to be scripting King's best novel for the screen is a godsend.
For those unfamiliar with the book, the miniseries, or the comics (how's living under a rock treating you?) THE STAND concerns a worldwide outbreak of the "superflu" that kills almost the entire population of the planet. The survivors find themselves caught between the forces of good, represented by Mother Abigail, and the forces of evil, represented by Randall Flagg, also known as the Walking Dude. It's epic horror and it's never been duplicated, although many have tried. It's a huge cast of characters, spread all across the country, and it's considered Stephen King's best work. If any screenwriter can find the true soul of the piece it's Steve Kloves, and Yates bringing him in for this is terrific.
I'll especially enjoy the casting on this one, and anticipate the rabid fervor of fans on it. Who would play The Walking Dude? Any speculations?
Next up for King is a tale about a high school teacher given the opportunity to go back in time and thwart the JFK assassination. It's called 11/22/63, looks like a brick of a book (reports are that it runs around a thousand pages). I can't wait to read it as some of my favorite King writing centers around alternate timelines (Drawing of the Three and The Wastelands anyone?).
ShowBlitz/Variety's Jeff Sneider reports that preempting the release of the book comes news of an option from a man who directed one of the best horror movies of all time. Silence of the Lambs' Jonathan Demme is set to write, produce and direct 11/22/63 with King serving as exec producer.
We know next to nothing about Neill Blomkamp's ELYSIUM except that it's a science fiction film set on a distant planet in the future and is something of a political thriller as well. It stars Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, and Matt Damon , and...Kidding aside, ELYSIUM sounds very interesting and Blomkamp certainly knows how to make a riveting film, so no worries there. Now we know why Damon's had his head shaved:
IN THEATERS AND ON DEMAND SEPTEMBER 9, 2011!Here's the synopsis:
As feuding warlords fight to expand their power, the noble monks of the Shaolin Temple clean up the mess left behind, tending to the injured while trying their best to protect the poor and weak. General Hou (Andy Lau, WARLORDS, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) has caused much of this mess with his violent and ruthless tactics that rarely discriminate between soldiers and civilians.
When Hao is betrayed by fellow general Cao Man (Nicholas Tse, THE PROMISE, SHAOLIN SOCCER), he is forced into hiding, and takes refuge with the monks (including Jackie Chan) at their hidden mountain temple. As the days pass, he finds himself more and more at ease as he learns the ways of peace, and begins to release his hatred through Martial Zen. But Cao is not far behind, and war soon reaches the temple, where the monks are ready to fight back- with their unstoppable Shaolin Kung Fu.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The great Bruce Campbell recently revealed on his Twitter page that he'll be reteaming once again with Mr. Sam Raimi in his next picture, Oz: The Great and Powerful.
Tiny role or starring, it's always great to see those two team up, especially with such a good cast Raimi already has in his Wizard of Oz prequel... Mila Kunis, James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz et al.
Now let's all go spam Bruce's twitter feed with Evil Dead 4 questions!
Hey folks, Harry here... So producer Joe Roth says that SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN is LORD OF THE RINGS like. Then he showed a production art tease that is being called impressive. Then we get a photo of Snow White with the White Tree of Gondor shield and looking all Joan of Arc-y. I'm wildly curious about this flick...
At Saturday’s Comic Con premiere of “Cowboys and Aliens” in San Diego, screenwriter-producer Roberto Orci told Cinepremiere that the next “Trek” would begin shooting “hopefullyyyyyy” in January.
A January 2012 start would not only make a June 2012 premiere nigh impossible, it would mean Bad Robot would have less than a year to get an effects-heavy spaceship action movie into cinemas by Christmas 2012.
This means of course that four years will have transpired between Kirk/Spock adventures, but do we want it fast or do we want it good? I’m guessing most fans are happy to give the film more time if it means dodging another sh***y “Trek” sequel.
The delay would also mean more waiting for another “Trek” TV series.
see link for videoSo Santa gets shot in the face, the Pope loses a tooth getting punched out, Harold gets his pole stuck on a... pole, and Neil Patrick Harris dies and goes to heaven. All in 3D, no less!
Cynics leave. Right now. I'm waiting. Yeah, you. Get the **** out.
Okay, who's left? You the kind of film lover that's willing to try anything? To risk sitting through a bad movie in the hopes of seeing something amazing and life-affirming? To see a filmmaker's first attempt at a movie and who knocks it out of the park? Do you remember when you first saw JAWS? Or SEVEN? SHAUN OF THE DEAD? Or THE EVIL DEAD? You knew you were in the presence of greatness, right? You knew that as a film geek, you would never quite be the same. It's a drug, isn't it? When you see something that utterly completely knocks you on your @$$? We film geeks chase that feeling every time we sit down in our darkened church. It's the closest I feel to God. When a story is clicking, the acting is clicking, and you are transported. I don't know much in this sh***y world, but I know this: the best films are those that take you places that you had no idea you wanted to go. And when it takes you there, you never want to leave.
ATTACK THE BLOCK is the best film this year so far.
I've written about this film at length; Harry's written about it , Beaks has written about it; Capone, Quint - we've all written about it. We are all uniformly in love with this material, and maybe you can think all this coverage is overkill. But we here at AICN all believe in this one simple truth - it's not about the big summer release, or the Oscar-bait film. We are advocates for the new. When a singular voice arrives on the scene, and gives us something wonderful as Joe Cornish has done with ATTACK THE BLOCK, there's a real danger that that voice will be lost in the noise and the rumble of all these major studio releases, and we feel that it's our duty to protect that voice and bring it to the attention of as many people as possible. I've screened the film here in Houston, and Harry's screened it in Austin, and Beaks in Los Angeles, and Capone in Chicago. Every single time audiences have come out jazzed and excited for the film, and I haven't come across anyone who didn't just fall in love with it.
Put it this way. If this film had been released in the 1980s with THE GOONIES, MONSTER SQUAD, E.T., CRITTERS, GREMLINS... we'd be talking about it to this day. We might even be talking about it over some of those movies. It's a movie that will stand the test of time...

Trailer! After letting Rhona Mitra handle the obligatory hot-warrior-chick lead in the third and most recent UNDERWORLD installment - RISE OF THE LYCANS - Kate Beckinsale once more returns to the franchise (reprising her original Selene role) for UNDERWORLD AWAKENING.
[youtube:3dijgxj0][/youtube:3dijgxj0]Hey, I make no apologies; I like the first two AMERICAN PIE films. I think they're funny and even sweet in their way, and I'm glad almost the entire cast is returning for the new film. I like that these characters have grown older and have different lives, and I think it's going to be as funny as the first two were. So, without further adieu, the new trailer:
I'm glad that if we're going to get another BLADE RUNNER film, that it's Ridley Scott who will be making it and not some studio hack brought in just to fill in the gaps. Scott also stated that it's looking like Deckard will not make an appearance in the film. Will we finally know decisively whether or not Deckard is a replicant? Will the past questions be answered? Scott isn't saying, but he did offer this bit about the first film - "Even though people think it’s a cool Philip Marlowe film with Deckard played by Harrison Ford, the film is very much about humanity.” What this means for the sequel is unclear, but I'm certain he'll explore what makes us human in comparison to the replicants in the new film.

TrekMovie has a report from "trusted sources" regarding the status of J.J. Abrams' soon-to-shoot sequel to his 2009 STAR TREK movie.
Seems the script from Orci, Kurtzman, and Lindelof is more or less finished (third draft), and Team Abrams is now scouting locations in preparation for a January 15th 2012 start-of-shooting. One of these locations is said to reprise a "famous Star Trek location."
More details can be found HERE .
[youtube:2ykdcunb][/youtube:2ykdcunb]By the way, William Shatner's THE CAPTAINS documentary is now streaming on Netflix. It's a very interesting piece that TREK fans should consider checking out. Some profound honesty from Patrick Stewart (in particular) regrading how acting/TREK negatively impacted his relationship with his family - rather touching, actually. As is Mulgrew's insight, and Bakula's insight. The film is, of course, highly Shatnerized...and Avery Brooks comes off a bit strangely here compared to other interviews I've seen with him...but each actor reveals touching truths about their time with their shows and its personal impact on them.
That's 2 weeks after the opening of Iron Man 3 - another fun year for us geeks it seems! :woo hoo:While plot details are being kept completely under wraps (though there is rampant speculation by me that Benicio Del Toro has been cast as the leader of the Gorn), Deadline has learned that J.J. Abrams's second STAR TREK film will be released on May 17th, 2013. It will also be shot in 3D.
