James Best, the prolific character actor whose cornpone Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane bedeviled Bo and Luke Duke for seven seasons of The Dukes of Hazzard, has died. He was 88.
Best died of complications from pneumonia following a brief illness, The Charlotte Observer reported Tuesday, citing longtime friend and Hollywood colleague Steve Latshaw.
The Kentucky-born actor was in hundreds of episodes of TV and dozens of movies, including The Caine Mutiny, but forged a television career that spanned several decades and popular shows including The Andy Griffith Show.

Loved the character too. The Friday night show was so popular that high school football in the south saw attendance plummet when they were in their prime.
The guy who played Cooter became a politician after the show ended.
